AD Migration 2003 to 2008 Server Steps

2003 Server AD Right click Domain  Raise Domain Functional Level: windows server 2008 Click Ok

Insert 2008 Server  Disk

Run – CMD –

Type D:

D:\cd sources
D:\sources\cd adprep
D:\sources\adprep>adprep/forestprep

D:\sources\adprep>adprep/rodcprep

2008 Server

Change the IP address to static in the same Vlan or subnet. then ping the primary server and check it

Run – dcpromo enter

use advanced mode
click next
exisiting forest – add a domain controller   type the 2003 domain name and credentials (admin password and username) select the default domain forest and default first-site-name.

select dns server, global catalog click yes

Replicate data over the network from an exisiting domain controller
use this specific domain controller :2003 server domain name in the list

click next type directory service restore mode administrator password.
Click next to start instalation and reboot

login as domain admin

Transfer FSMO Roles in 2008

Open Active Directory Service
Right Click on your domain Operation Masters.
RID tab Click Change to 2008
PDC tab Click Change to 2008
infrastructure tab Click Change to 2008
OPen Active Directory domain & trusts
Right Click ADDT and Click Operation masters, Click Chnage to 2008

RUN-CMD

Type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll and press enter
Succeeded click ok

Type MMC
Add Snap in Select AD Schema  Right Click Active Directory Schema and click Chnage active directory domain controller.

Change Directory Server – This Domain Controller or AD LDS instance select 2008 Domain Controller. Click    Ok

Right Click Active Directory Schema and Click Operation Master
Click Change and Click yes – ok – close .

Demote 2003 AD Server

Run – dcpromo

Click next click ok
Make sure you not unchecked tick click next .

Type Admin User name  and Password Click next
Start Demote .

click ok for Error dialodue bix appears and restart the uninstallation process.
Click next finish. Restart  login select this computer.

right Click computer select workgroup and enter the administrator username and password. change to workgroup and restart.

login to 2008 server ADUS
Select Computer folder Delete 2003 server computer name.

Open DNS
Delete Server 2003 Entry

Open ADUC
Raise Domain Functioal Level to windows server 2008

RUN-CMD
Type ntdsutil
ntdsutil: metadata clean
metadata cleanup: conn
server connections:connect to domain xxx.com
binding to \\2008.xxx.com
connected to \\2008.xxx.com using credentials of locally logged on user.
server connection: q
metdata cleanup:select oper target
select operation target: list site
Found 1 sites(s)
0-CN=default-first-site-name.CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=xxx,DC=com
select operation target: select site 0
site – CN=default- First-site-name,CN=sites,CN=Configuration, DC=xxx,DC=COm
no current domain
no current server
no current naming context
select operation target: list domain in site
Found 1 domain(s)
0 – DC=xxx,DC=com
select operation target :select domain 0

Open Active Directory Sites & Services
Select Default First Site Name
Delete Server 2003 entry under “Servers”

Change the 2008 server Ip address to 2003 server Ip Address
